In 2007, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) issued a report entitled, Cancer Care for the Whole Patient: Meeting Psychosocial Health Needs, which declared psychosocial support an essential part of cancer care:

"These problems—including patients' lack of information or skills needed to manage the illness; anxiety, depression or other emotional problems; lack of transportation or other resources; and disruptions in work, school, and family life can cause additional suffering—weaken adherence to prescribed treatments, and threaten patients' return to health."

This report was and is the most substantial, evidence based endorsement of the work of the Cancer Support Community in our organization’s 29 year history. The report states that community-based nonprofit organizations like CSC Greater Miami are crucial to delivering the critical psychosocial support necessary for cancer patients and their families, and that these services need to be better incorporated into the continuum of care.

All medical professionals who treat patients affected by cancer can help them receive the most effective treatment with a referral to the Cancer Support Community Greater Miami. Our center is fully bilingual and bicultural offering services in Spanish and offering interpretation to Spanish for key educational programs. The Cancer Support Community staff of licensed professionals partner with oncologists, radiation oncologists and other medical professionals to provide a holistic approach to the treatment of cancer.
