SPECIAL COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, February 3, 2017

It is with deep regret that we officially announce the closing of Cancer Support Community Greater Miami (CSCGM) effective March 31, 2017. The local affiliate of Cancer Support Community worldwide, CSCGM has been providing free, professionally led cancer support programs and services in Miami-Dade County for fifteen years since opening our doors in March, of 2002.

We are proud of all that our organization has accomplished in that time. However, as part of the global network that pioneered the practice of psychosocial oncology, we are MOST proud of the fact that we have touched the lives of more than 27,000 cancer patients and their loved ones; 27,000 people that needed us at perhaps the worst times in their lives; facing a cancer diagnosis and searching for support, education and hope.

Every program offered at the Cancer Support Community Greater Miami since DAY 1 has been free of charge and led by professionals licensed in their fields of expertise who are experienced in dealing with the unique needs of children, teens and adults with cancer and their caregivers. Offered as a complement to conventional medical treatment, our thirty-five year old philosophy "Cancer patients who participate in their fight for recovery, along with their healthcare team, will improve the quality of their lives and may enhance the possibility of their recovery", has today become a recognized medical standard and expectation for treating the whole cancer patient.

The cancer landscape in South Florida has evolved since 2002 and while there's still great need for cancer support services in South Florida, the Cancer Support Community Greater Miami can no longer be part of the local and impressive platform of community cancer care providers.

As we took a look out over the next few weeks and months, the decision was made to suspend operations to allow thoughtful planning for the future. Please know, the Board and Staff are working diligently to make this transition as gentle as possible for all but with our priorities intentionally focused on the needs of our cancer patients and their caregivers.

We extend our most sincere appreciation to our organizational founders who humbly imagined all that CSCGM could do for our community, to our generous donors who have supported our work, and to the thousands of combined volunteer leaders, advocates, medical professionals, government officials, journalists and vendors who graciouslypartnered with us So that no one faces cancer alone. We thank each of you, for your time, talent and treasure. We are grateful.

We encourage all of you to refer or attend other community programs that offer services to individuals with a diagnosis of cancer. Those resources are listed on this website in English, Spanish and Creole – also for Kids and Teens with Cancer.

The headquarters office of the Cancer Support Community is deeply saddened at this development and has been very supportive in this process. The Cancer Support Community headquarters team is committed to exploring options and conducting dialogue with healthcare facilities in the area to ensure that free cancer support services return to the Miami area.
